Why I do not like birthdays

Birthdays are considered special and wondering days. On the other hand, I don’t like to think of birthdays as gorgeous or even big days.

You should be asking, “dude, why don't you like birthdays?”

Now, I will try to explain my point of view about it.

I do not think that just because I was born on December 10 means it is a special day, that the alignment of planets has influence over my life and my personality… Indeed, for me, all these things make no sense. December 10 is just a day, like any other, and my personality can be changed during all my life.

What do ordinary people do on their birthdays?

Let us take the case of some classmates and friends. They are receiving huge messages about how people love them, how special and amazing they are or even a simple “happy birthday, today is your big day”...

Without a doubt, if you like those things, that’s okay. I’m not here to say what you should like or not… I just want to share my viewpoint.

However, these common things are pretty boring to me.

My birthday is the moment in the year that I consider all the things that I did during my year.

In fact, it is the day I take to think if my life is making sense to me. This is when I start to think if I’m doing things that I do love.

Why? Instead of that classic sentence “one more year of life”, for me it’s “one less year of life”.

Please, do not get me wrong. I don’t think of this sentence in a depressive or dangerous way. But the same way that Stoics did. This is my “memento mori”. Truly this is how I remember that one day, I will die.

Immediately, when I remember this, one question comes again to my mind “am I doing the things that I do love?” or “am I living or just existing?”.

Thus, if one day you see me with an awful face at my birthday, it’s because I’m reflecting on it and it does not mean my year was a piece of crap, it’s just a real time to think in all my last 365 days.

Life is pretty short, and I realized it years ago.

No, actually not…

The truth is I’m still making sense of this fact. And, in order to understand if I am really making improvement over it, I like to use my birthday to reflect on it and know if I am on my own right road.
